Brum Brings Proven Success Developing, Delivering and Supporting Professional Open Source Software

Colombo, Sri Lanka and Mountain View, CA – April 18, 2008 – WSO2, the open source SOA company, announced today that Daniel Brum has joined WSO2 as director of technical sales. Most recently serving as technical director at MuleSource, Brum brings several years of proven success in developing, delivering and supporting professional open source software. Brum will be based in Toronto, Canada.

Brum is part of WSO2’s expanded management team, which is also being announced today. (For more information, see press release, “WSO2 Expands Management Team,” dated April 18, 2008.)

Brum brings to WSO2 extensive open source technology experience—both as a vendor and an enterprise customer. At MuleSource, he was a lead technical evangelist and technologist working with customers and the engineering teams. Before joining MuleSource, Brum worked with the JBoss Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) team as a core developer and architect, and he was the lead behind the corporate Rosetta project, which was donated to JBoss and became the seed for the JBoss ESB. Brum also worked with the pre-sales technical teams at JBoss, helping to evangelize the company’s professional open source model and products. Prior to JBoss, Brum was the head of enterprise applications and architecture with insurance provider Aviva Canada where he introduced open source tools such as Linux, JBoss, and PostGreSQL to the internal development team.

“WSO2 is at the forefront in delivering a comprehensive platform to support enterprises’ heterogeneous service-oriented architectures, which are best served by a flexible, open source approach,” said Brum. “I am excited to join the industry’s leading open source SOA experts at WSO2 in helping companies to realize the strategic benefits of open source SOA implementations—both internally and across their business networks.”

At WSO2, Brum will focus on named accounts in the company’s priority vertical markets and build the company’s business in the Americas.

“From the start, our mission has been to provide innovative and powerful open source software that addresses the real-world SOA demands of enterprise developers and architects,” said Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarana, founder and CEO of WSO2. “We are thrilled to have Daniel onboard and look forward to tapping his depth of vendor-side and corporate experience in open source middleware to further extend the success of our customers’ SOA implementations.”

Prior to his roles at MuleSource, JBoss and Aviva Canada, Brum was the CTO of a startup in the late ‘90s, creating services for the intellectual property information technology space. He also worked as a consultant and software architect with companies such as Chubb & Son Insurance, Thomas Cook Americas, Sunlife Financial, Deloitte & Touche Consulting Group, SAS Argentina, and IBM Canada Footprint Division.

Award
WSO2 Web Services Application Server 2.0 Honored for Programming-Free Data Services Designed for the Agile, On-Demand Nature of SOA

Colombo, Sri Lanka and Mountain View, CA – April 16, 2008 – WSO2, the open source SOA company, announced today that the WSO2 Web Services Application Server (WSAS) 2.0 has received the SearchSOA.com Product of the Year award in the Data Services/Integration category.

Earning a SearchSOA.com Gold product designation, the WSO2 WSAS 2.0 was one of this year’s winners, who were selected according to their performance in the following areas: innovation, performance, ease of integration into environment, ease of use and manageability, functionality, value, and how well they enable service orientation.

According to SearchSOA.com, “SOA has created new age problems for data. ETL-based data warehouses aren't built for the agile, on-demand nature of SOA and it is a new age, open source vendor taking top honors in the data services/integration category. WSO2's data services allow developers to expose data stored in relational databases in minutes via a Web services API without programming. An XML response is generated using database data, making it fast and easy to include this data in Web mashups.”

One judge also noted, "It's nice to see open source software take on the growing data access problem. This is a tool that's likely to make both architects and developers happy. It's service-oriented, and it addresses a common tactical problem that teams face in most every project."

“We are greatly honored to receive the Product of the Year award for Data Services/Integration from SearchSOA.com, one of the industry’s premier resources for real-world SOA solutions and strategies,” said Sanjiva Weerawarana, founder and CEO of WSO2. “This is strong validation of our fundamental belief that a new generation of open source software will play a strategic role in enabling enterprises’ inherently heterogeneous service-oriented architectures. We will continue to deliver on this mission by expanding on the rich data services, development and integration functionality in the WSO2 Web Services Application Server.”

About WSAS 2.0

The WSO2 Web Services Application Server 2.0 sets new standards for simplifying the delivery of Web services. WSAS 2.0 is the first open source server to simply expose data services to tap relational databases for mashups. It also features Eclipse integration to let developers work directly in the IDE, provides clustering for high availability, allows Enterprise Java Beans (EJBs) to be exposed as Web services, offers backward compatibility for Apache Axis1, and extends security through support for the Web services (WS-*) security stack and XML Key Management Specification (XKMS).

The WSO2 Data Services capability is a key enabler for implementing a service-oriented architecture. Increasingly, customers are finding that exposing existing relational databases and data warehouses is an essential requirement for their SOA strategy. WSO2 Data Services functionality offers an easy-to-use and yet powerful approach that supports full security management, including authentication, authorization, encryption and digital signatures.

The completely open source, openly developed WSAS 2.0 is based on Apache Axis2, one of the world’s fastest Java Web services engines, and features a lightweight Ajax administration console to simplify configuration and management. Capable of more than 3000 transactions per second on a dual-core system, the highly tuned WSAS 2.0 runs four to five times faster than Axis1. It is the first application server to support the full XML-based WS-* stack and REST in a simple, clean, lightweight model that makes it easier to develop, deploy, manage, and monitor Web services.

WSO2 recently released the WSO2 Web Services Application Server 2.2.1, which extends Data Services to include database connection pooling, support for Microsoft Excel (97-2003) and the comma-separated values (CSV) formats, and an enhanced user interface. The newest WSO2 WSAS version also features Java Management Extension (JMX)-based monitoring, WS-Security 1.1 support, and enhancements to its clustering capabilities and Web-based management console.
