Podcast brings together Interarbor, RedMonk and WSO2 to discuss role of Data Services in enabling SOA and new cloud-based data hosting models

Mountain View, CA – August 11, 2008 – Paul Fremantle, WSO2 CTO, is featured in a new podcast titled “Data Services Provide Catalyst for SOA and Set Stage for New Cloud-Based Data Hosting Models.” The WSO2-sponsored podcast was published today by Dana Gardner, founder of IT research firm Interarbor Solutions, and author of Dana Gardner’s BriefingsDirect blog on ZDNet.com. Joining Fremantle and Gardner is James Governor, a principal analyst and founder at RedMonk.

Fremantle, Gardner and Governor discuss how implementing a service-oriented architecture (SOA) is enabling an expansive reach for data, and how this will relate to the development of cloud infrastructures and services. They also examine what technologies and approaches organizations will need to federate and integrate these data sources, services and hosts—without additional risk. Finally, they look at the opportunities to bridge the risk reduction and larger availability of data by using open-source software.

WSO2 adds three platforms to Microsoft .NET SOA interoperability demo at OSCON 2008

.NET interoperability extends beyond PHP and Java to Include Ruby, Spring and Perl

Portland, OR – July 23, 2008 – WSO2, the open source SOA company, will demonstrate extended service-oriented architecture (SOA) interoperability with the Microsoft .NET Framework at the OSCON 2008 Open Source Convention being held at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, OR. Featured will be a StockTrader 2.0 composite application that highlights new .NET interoperability with Ruby, Spring and Perl in addition to the interoperability with PHP and Java that was highlighted at Microsoft Tech Tech•Ed North America 2008 IT Professionals conference last month. The demonstrations will take place at a co-branded booth for Microsoft and WSO2 in the OSCON Expo Hall, July 23-24, 2008.

StockTrader 2.0 is the result of a mutual effort between WSO2 and Microsoft to provide a reference application for software architects and developers implementing today’s heterogeneous SOAs. It demonstrates the several ways in which they can create composite Web services by bridging Microsoft .NET-based applications to other environments using WSO2’s integrated, heterogeneous SOA platform.

StockTrader 2.0 Demo Combines .NET, Java, PHP, Ruby, Spring and Perl

Where: Microsoft-WSO2 Booth at OSCON 2008 Expo
When: Wednesday, July 23, 10 a.m.–4:30 p.m. and 6:00-7:30 p.m. (reception). Thursday, July 24, 10 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
Demo: The StockTrader 2.0 demo composite application is based on distributed Microsoft .NET and Apache/WSO2 middleware components. It illustrates how interoperable implementations of Web service protocols allow a seamless mix-and-match of the application’s components at runtime, which can be dynamically virtualized against physical resources on-premises and across the cloud.

Components included in the demo are:

  • Choice of User interface: .NET smart client, PHP and Ruby Web applications
  • Choice of business processing service: .NET, Java, PHP, Spring and Perl
  • Choice of order processing service: .NET, Java, PHP, Ruby, Spring and Perl

WSO2 provides enterprise-class protection of service interactions with support for the full WS-Security stacks in the WSO2 Web Services Application Server and Web Services Framework for Spring, both based on Apache Axis2/Java, and in the WSO2 Web Services Frameworks for PHP, Ruby and Perl, which are based on Apache Axis2/C.

A download of the StockTrader 2.0 demo is available on the WSO2 Oxygen Tank developer portal for SOA at http://wso2.org/interop/stocktrader . The demo currently features .NET interoperability with PHP and Java. The expanded version, which adds interoperability with Ruby, Spring and Perl, will be available for download shortly.

WSO2 Mashup Server 1.5 adds rich data services and expanded security

WSO2 Combines Ease-of-Use and Enterprise-Class SOA Functionality in Open Source Server for Service Composition

Mountain View, CA – July 21, 2008 – WSO2, the open source SOA company, today announced that version 1.5 of the WSO2 Mashup Server is now available. The open source WSO2 Mashup Server combines the simplicity and richness of mashups with the reusability, security, reliability and governance required for a service-oriented architecture (SOA). With Version 1.5, the WSO2 Mashup Server adds powerful WSO2 Data Services and security features for enterprise-class service composition.

The WSO2 Mashup Server 1.5, which builds on innovative technology introduced in the 1.0 release, is a freely available open source server for deploying mashup services. Using the flexible and dynamic JavaScript language makes it easy to describe logic for acquiring information, analyze and combine this data, and expose it to the user. The JavaScript programming model includes components that help acquire information from a range of sources, including Web services, scraped Web pages, AtomPub and RSS feeds, and local files. After scripting together these information sources, the results can be easily published as a new Web service, feeds, Ajax-style Web pages, or notifications via instant messaging or email.

“For years, enterprises have sought the ability to access the widely disparate data sources in their organizations for greater productivity,” said Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarana, CEO of WSO2. “The integrated WSO2 Data Services and expanded security functionality in our Mashup Server 1.5 make this a reality—enabling the deployment of trusted, enterprise-class composite services from multiple data sources in as little as a few hours.”

WSO2 Mashup Server Features

The WSO2 Mashup Server 1.5 is built on the WSO2 Web Services Application Server, based on Apache/Axis2. The WSO2 Mashup Server can be used as an individual development and service deployment tool, or it can scale up smoothly to support team, enterprise, or Internet-scale communities. Each Mashup Server is capable of hosting large numbers of users and mashups—all connected into a community through tags, ratings, comments, and other Web 2.0-style interface features.

Key new features in Version 1.5 include:

  • Integrated WSO2 Data Services, providing mashup-ready Web service interfaces to relational databases and other data sources such as Excel spreadsheets, and comma-separated values (CSVs).
  • Integrated UI for easily managing secured mashup services based on WS-Security. Users can choose among some 20 popular enterprise scenarios providing various types and combinations of authentication, encryption, and signing.
  • API and configuration extensions, facilitating the consumption of secured services based on WS-Security—from enabling communications between secured services to defining who is allowed to access a service and in what ways.
  • User login using OpenID open source electronic IDs complements existing login options based on username/password and Microsoft InfoCard-based electronic IDs.
  • Google Gadget support. Version 1.5 offers stubs, templates, and try-it pages for Google Gadgets that can be hosted within the WSO2 Mashup Server or externally, such as in a user’s iGoogle page. It also includes a beta dashboard add-in for hosting Google Gadgets within the WSO2 Mashup Server itself.
  • Feature and usability enhancements for greater productivity, performance, and ease of use.

Availability and Support

The WSO2 Mashup Server 1.5 is available for download today. As a fully open source solution released under the Apache License 2.0, the WSO2 Mashup Server does not carry any software licensing or subscription fees. Mooshup.com, the hosted online version of the Mashup Server, offers free membership upon email verification. WSO2 offers a range of service and support options for the WSO2 Mashup Server 1.5. These include support subscriptions, training, consulting, custom development and development support.
