WSO2 Demonstrates Interoperability with Microsoft’s Web Services Framework
Local Technology leader confirms its flagship product, WSO2 Tungsten, fully interoperates with Microsoft’s Windows Communication Foundation

March 30, 2006, Colombo, Sri Lanka – WSO2, the leading open source Web services middleware platform company , participated in a round of interoperability testing between its flagship product WSO2 Tungsten and Microsoft’s Windows Communications Foundation (WCF) to ensure interoperability for key Web services systems for secure, reliable and transacted Web services communications. As a result, WSO2 is 100 percent interoperable with Microsoft’s Windows Communications Foundation, a key feature in Windows Vista, the next version of Microsoft’s operating system.

The WCF Interoperability Plug-fest hosted by Microsoft was attended by technology companies including JBoss, Sun and Oracle to test interoperability with WCF. WCF is a part of WinFX, Microsoft’s managed code programming model included in Microsoft’s next generation operating system, Windows Vista. The three-day event was an open forum for companies that have implementations of various Web services protocols to meet with engineers from Microsoft and test against the upcoming version of WCF. WSO2 focused its interoperability on key enterprise features, specifically reliable messaging, security, and atomic transactions for WSO2 Tungsten/Java and WSO2 Tungsten/C.

“We tested simple and complex type implementations of ADB and XML beans data binding, WS-Security, WS-Reliable Messaging and MTOM of Axis2 Java as well as the Axiom based implementation and WS- Addressing of Axis2 C with the WCF implementation. We were able to, in most cases, achieve 100 percent interoperability” said Samisa Abeysinghe, Archiect of Tungsten/C.

This is the second in a series of plug-fests by Microsoft. At the first plug-fest in November 2005, WSO2 was also able to complete the various tests and ensure compliance with Web service standards.

WSO2 also proved itself at the WS-Addressing interoperability test suite which was conducted by W3C to assess interoperability between different implementations of the WS-Addressing candidate recommendation. For the recommendation to become a standard specification, the working group is expected to demonstrate four interoperable implementations. WSO2 was joined by IBM, Microsoft, Sun and JBoss in this endeavor and successfully completed all the tests.

“We’re very proud to be raising the Sri Lankan flag in these interop events. Our efforts are proving that open source middleware technologies produced in Sri Lanka are equal or better than any middleware from anywhere in the world”, said Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarana, Founder, Chairman & CEO of WSO2. He also highlighted the importance of local developers complying with such standards and being interoperable with leading industry vendors.

Standards are vital in Web services. Open standards such as WSDL (Web Services description Language) and SOAP (Simple Access Object Protocol) launched Web services as they are known today. However to realize the benefit of standards, practical interop work becomes a necessity to ensure strict compliance to the specifications.

“The WCF Interop Plugfest brings together companies across the industry to help ensure broad interoperability of Web services implementations.” said Ari Bixhorn, Director of WinFX Strategy for Microsoft. “We’re excited to see technologies built on the WS-* specifications, such as WS02 Tungsten, interoperating with WCF, resulting in increased benefits for our mutual customers”.

WSO2 Tungsten, which successfully passed these interoperability tests is available for immediate download at http://www.wso2.com/products/tungsten. The interop test codes will also be available at the WSO2 Oxygen Tank developers portal at http://www.wso2.net/.
