New WSO2 Business Process Server makes it easy to compose and orchestrate BPEL business processes
Open Source BPS is Part of WSO2 Carbon, Industry’s First Fully Componentized SOA Framework
Mountain View, CA – February 9, 2009 – WSO2, the open source SOA company, today launched the WSO2 Business Process Server (BPS) 1.0. The open source WSO2 BPS enables developers to easily deploy business processes written using the WS-BPEL standard, and it also serves as the business process management and hosting environment for a service-oriented architecture (SOA). Based on WSO2 Carbon, the industry’s first fully componentized SOA framework, it provides developers with a level of flexibility and ease of integration unmatched by any other business process management (BPM) solution on the market.
“Customers have long recognized the value of business process management for SOAs, but the cost and complexity of integrating BPEL engines has kept many from doing so,” said Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarana, founder and CEO of WSO2 and co-author of the original BPEL specification. “With WSO2 BPS, companies can now get a robust BPM solution—with far less complexity and the flexibility to deploy just the functionality they need.”
WSO2 BPS is being released in conjunction with the WSO2 Carbon SOA framework and the other products based on it—including the proven WSO2 Web Services Application Server (WSAS) 3.0, WSO2 Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) 2.0, and WSO2 Registry 2.0. For more information, see the related press releases also dated February 9, 2009.Componentized WSO2 BPS Combines Robust BPEL with Flexible Deployment
WSO2 BPS is powered by the Apache Orchestration Director Engine (ODE) BPEL engine. It provides a full BPEL runtime; deploys business processes written following the WS-BPEL 2.0 and BPEL4WS 1.1 standards; and manages BPEL packages, processes and instances. As part of the WSO2 Carbon SOA platform, which is based on the OSGi specification, WSO2 BPS runs on the same core Carbon framework that provides all WSO2 Carbon SOA components with enterprise-class management, security, clustering, logging, statistics, and tracing. Additionally, WSO2 BPS uses the graphical unified management console—which supports all Carbon components—to deploy, manage, and view processes, as well as manage and view process instances. Other key features include:
- Eclipse BPEL support, including the ability to work with Eclipse BPEL tooling and the availability of a plug-in to deploy Eclipse-developed processes in WSO2 BPS.
- Try-It wizard for testing new processes before they are deployed.
- Caching and throttling support for business processes to ensure optimal performance and availability.
- Shutdown/restart support, which allows the administrator to suspend, resume and terminate processes.
- Transport management allowing simple configuration of JMS, Mail, File and HTTP transports.
- Full security via the core Carbon framework, including authentication and authorization, with full support for WS-Trust, WS-Security and WS-SecureConversation
Because WSO2 BPS is completely integrated with all other WSO2 Carbon SOA components, it brings a plug-and-play simplicity to deployment. For example, it is no longer necessary to download and implement WSO2 BPS and the WSO2 ESB 2.0 as separate products. Instead, developers can choose to start with the WSO2 BPS product, which includes the core Carbon framework and graphical unified management console. They can then add a mediation component from the ESB, and it will automatically integrate with the BPS, the core Carbon framework and console. Similarly, developers can choose to start with the WSO2 WSAS 3.0 for creating and running Web services, and then simply download the relevant BPS components rather than the whole product.Availability and Support
The WSO2 Business Process Server 1.0 is available for download today. To get started, developers need to download the full product to get the core Carbon framework and unified management console that drive all of the components. Individual components will be available within one month of the initial product release, allowing developers to simply add new capabilities to any of the core products as needed.
As a fully open source solution released under the Apache License 2.0, WSO2 BPS does not carry any software licensing or subscription fees. WSO2 offers a range of service and support options for WSO2 BPS. These include support subscriptions, training, consulting, custom development and development support.
