Open Source WSO2 Governance Registry 5.0 Brings Consumer Store-Like Experience to Governing APIs, Apps, Services and Other Enterprise Assets

WSO2 Governance Registry integrates WSO2 Enterprise Store and WSO2 API Manager capabilities, providing a single center for governing APIs, services, tokens and more via a consumer-like interface

Mountain View, CA – November 3, 2015 – Increasingly, developers expect enterprise systems to match the simplicity and social capabilities they experience with popular consumer storefronts, such as Amazon, Google and Apple. WSO2 Governance Registry 5.0, announced today, enables organizations to address these new usability demands by providing a socially enabled consumer store-like environment for managing enterprise assets across the entire lifecycle.

The 100% open source WSO2 Governance Registry delivers comprehensive, out-of-the-box support for service-oriented architecture (SOA) governance, configuration governance, development process governance, design and runtime governance, and lifecycle management. Version 5.0:

  • Merges the functionality of WSO2 Enterprise Store 2.0 into WSO2 Governance Registry, providing a consumer-grade experience for developers to browse and find assets.
  • Incorporates the API governance capabilities of WSO2 API Manager, allowing WSO2 Governance Registry to serve as a single center for governing everything, from APIs to services to tokens.

“Today’s enterprise developers are digital consumers. Whether purchasing running shoes online or downloading apps and APIs, they want to browse relevant subjects, read descriptions, and make decisions based other users’ ratings and comments,” said Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarana, WSO2 founder, CEO and chief architect. “With WSO2 Governance Registry 5.0, we are empowering organizations to foster compliance by giving developers a consumer-grade experience for accessing and governing approved enterprise assets. At the same time, our comprehensive open source software provides the robust governance, management and security enterprises demand.”

Socially Enabled WSO2 Governance Registry 5.0

WSO2 Governance Registry provides the right level of structure straight out of the box to support SOA governance, configuration governance, development process governance, design and runtime governance, and lifecycle management. Together with WSO2 Governance Registry’s socially enabled interface, these capabilities facilitate team collaboration in the management, ranking and reuse of enterprise applications and Web services.

With version 5.0, the capabilities of WSO2 Enterprise Store 2.0 have been integrated into WSO2 Governance Registry to provide a consumer-grade store interface for developers, which replaces the admin console of earlier product versions. This facilitates the ability to manage associations between assets and asset life cycles, as well as set up notifications for subscribed assets, asset lifecycle state changes, updates to assets, etc.

Using the embedded WSO2 Enterprise Store functionality, IT organizations can now set up their own consumer-like store where users can easily discover and subscribe to not only applications, but also APIs, e-books, gadgets, websites and any other asset types the enterprise chooses to offer. Gadgets and websites are supported out of the box. Other assets—such as applications, APIs, and e-books—can be supported through the ability to define new asset types. Only WSO2 provides a socially enabled enterprise store, so users can rate and review assets. Meanwhile, back-office capabilities for publishing assets, along with lifecycle management and governance ensure compliance with corporate and IT policies and procedures.

WSO2 Governance Registry 5.0 also embeds the API governance functionality of WSO2 API Manager 1.9. This allows functions, such as API creation, publishing, subscription, and token generation and regeneration, among others, to be performed within WSO2 Governance Registry. Significantly, it also means enterprises can use WSO2 Governance Registry as a single center for governing everything, from APIs to services to tokens.

Additionally, WSO2 Governance Registry 5.0 offers new dependency visualization functionality that lets users check the impact of a change to an artifact using the dependency graph option prior to changing the artifact. Users also can filter resources based on the association type and search artifacts based on the dependency type.

Other new and enhanced features in WSO2 Governance Registry 5.0, include:

  • Notification support for users is enhanced with email templates and support for clustered environments.
  • With new out-of-the-box support for Swagger imports, users can either upload Swagger content via a file or import it using a link.
  • The addition of versioning support for Web Service Definition Language (WSDL), Web Application Description Language (WADL), XML Schema Definition (XSD) and policies facilitates the ability to manage the versions of these artifacts.
  • The new time in lifecycle state lets users check the time duration of an artifact in a specific lifecycle state; users also can set checkpoints to receive notifications.
  • A new custom storage path for any registry extension (RXT) provides more flexibility for users to place artifacts in their preferred, customized storage path.
  • New multiple lifecycle support functionality means that multiple life cycles can be attached with artifacts, providing the flexibility to manage enterprise or API Store-related life cycles and governance life cycles without one affecting the other.

Proven Scalability, Flexible Deployment

WSO2 Governance Registry is built on the same modular, fully componentized OSGi-compliant code base as the award-winning WSO2 Carbon enterprise middleware platform. Like all Carbon-based WSO2 products, it is inherently cloud-enabled and uses proven core framework components that provide a consistent set of enterprise-class management, security, clustering, logging, statistics, tracing, and other capabilities. Significantly, the product provides proven scalability, since it uses the same core technologies and runtime of WSO2 Carbon, which are handling anywhere from millions to billions of transactions per day at enterprises around the world.

Additionally, the componentized architecture maximizes the flexibility enterprises have when deploying WSO2 Governance Registry. Because the software is cloud-enabled, WSO2 Governance Registry can migrate between servers, private clouds, public clouds, and hybrid cloud environments. Moreover, enterprises can customize WSO2 Governance Registry by adding WSO2 Carbon middleware products or the 175-plus components on which they are based.
