WSO2 CTO to Present Session on Securing IoT Devices at Internet of Things Conference 2014

IoTCon session will examine architectural best practices for securing M2M devices with standard protocols, such as OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, and User-Managed Access

Mountain View, CA – August 27, 2014 – The Internet of Things (IoT) and machine-to-machine technologies are providing opportunities for enterprises to create new business models for interacting and collaborating with customers and partners. However, they also bring new challenges to protecting privacy and data. WSO2 co-founder and CTO Paul Fremantle will address the security issues faced by IoT devices and M2M technologies at the Internet of Things Conference (IoTCon) 2014.

WSO2 is a Bronze Sponsor of IoTCon 2014, which will run September 1-3, 2014 at Nhow Hotel Berlin in Berlin.

Securing the Internet of Things

Paul’s presentation, “Securing the Internet of Things,” will be held 9:45 – 10:45 a.m. on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 in Music Hall 1 at Nhow Hotel Berlin.

In this session, Paul will discuss the security challenges around using M2M devices with protocols, such as Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT) and Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP). He will begin by examining models for encryption, federated identity, and authorization. He then will explore best practices for securing MQTT with Transport Layer Security (TLS), challenges with the Arduino open source electronics platform, and the use of hardware encryption for microcontrollers.

Next, Paul will discuss the requirement for user-centric IoT use cases to provide users with control over how their things collect and share data. As part of this discussion, he will review how protocols on the Internet, such as OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, and User-Managed Access (UMA) have been defined to enable a user consent and authorization model that respects privacy. Paul then will look at the issues with applying these protocols to the M2M world, as well as review existing proposals and activity for extending M2M protocols to include federated identity concepts.

As part of the session, Paul will deliver a live demonstration of Arduino interoperating with Eclipse Paho open source messaging for M2M while secured by OAuth 2.0.

Integrated Open Source Approach to the Connected Business

The WSO2 booth at IoTCon will have experts available to discuss the synergistic, integrated approach of WSO2’s 100% open source platforms in addressing the demands of the connected business, including the management and security of IoT devices. Among the solutions are: products from the comprehensive WSO2 Carbon enterprise middleware platform, including WSO2 Identity Server, WSO2 Governance Registry, and WSO2 API Manager; WSO2 Enterprise Mobility Manager; and the WSO2 Private PaaS and WSO2 Public Cloud platforms.

Significantly, all WSO2 solutions are built on the same fully componentized, OSGI-compliant code base. As a result, developers can easily deploy and customize any of these WSO2 products and the 175-plus components on which they are comprised, providing greater flexibility and agility to meet changing enterprise demands.

In addition to WSO2 cloud platforms, all WSO2 Carbon enterprise middleware products also are fully multitenant and cloud-ready. This means IT professionals can write an application once and deploy it on the same middleware on-premises, in the cloud, or in a hybrid environment.
