WSO2 Launches WSO2 App Factory 2.0 for Enterprise DevOps and ALM With Continuous Cloud Delivery

Newest release of WSO2 App Factory strengthens PaaS and tenant-handling functionality, streamlines the development process, and expands insight into the application life cycle

Palo Alto, CA and Barcelona – June 16, 2014 – The cloud and API management are enabling new models for connected businesses. As a result, enterprises are seeking greater control of the applications being developed with those APIs—within their organizations and across their customer and partner networks. WSO2 delivers significant new capabilities to address this demand with WSO2 App Factory 2.0. The announcement is being made in conjunction with WSO2Con Europe 2014, which runs June 16-18, 2014 in Barcelona, Spain.

WSO2 App Factory 2.0 is the latest release of WSO2’s shared, elastic, and self-service enterprise DevOps platform, which enables multiple project teams to collaboratively write applications, manage the application life cycles, and provide continuous cloud delivery. Robust life-cycle management and governance ensure compliance with IT, corporate and government policies. Meanwhile, an API Store, provided through integration with WSO2 API Manager, gives developers easy access to both internal and external APIs. With Version 2.0, WSO2 App Factory 2.0:

  • Runs on WSO2 Private PaaS 4.0, which launches today and is the first platform as a service built on the Apache Stratos 4.0 PaaS framework.
  • Expands capabilities for handling tenants with lazy loading and improved Jenkins build to improve performance.
  • Enables developers to fork their own code repositories and builds.
  • Provides executive dashboards via integration with WSO2 Business Activity Monitor (WSO2 BAM).

“More enterprises are seeking to gain a competitive advantage by extending their business capabilities across a connected ecosystem of internal teams, suppliers, channel partners, distributors and customers,” said Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarana, WSO2 founder and CEO. “We are building on our commitment to these organizations with WSO2 App Factory 2.0, which adds more robust PaaS capabilities, streamlines the development process, and provides greater insight into the application life cycle—all through an open cloud-based platform that lowers barriers to integration, provisioning and interaction.”

Comprehensive, Open Approach to Enterprise DevOps

Version 2.0 is the latest release of WSO2 App Factory, which delivers an open source, open standards approach to cloud-enabled enterprise DevOps and application life-cycle management (ALM). It provides teams with a unified, controlled platform to manage tasks across cloud portals for development, testing, production, and continuous builds in order to provision quality assurance environments, run continuous integration tests, and continuously promote and deploy software assets across development life-cycle environments and production. With WSO2 App Factory, developers can easily create and administer projects, automatically build applications, and continuously deliver applications.

The ability to impose policies and standards between life-cycle stages with WSO2 App Factory means an application won't progress from one stage to the next before meeting regulatory and quality standards. Meanwhile, the API Store provided via WSO2 API Manager integration lets developers access APIs published in-house or connect to external APIs, such as Google APIs, through the WSO2 App Factory user interface (UI). This fosters cross-organizational collaboration and encourages reuse, speeding time to market. Additionally, App Factory’s numerous dashboards make it easy to manage and monitor projects throughout the life cycle.

WSO2 App Factory is built on—and integrates with—the award-winning 100% open source WSO2 Carbon enterprise middleware platform and WSO2 Private PaaS, the most complete PaaS available. WSO2 App Factory also provides out-of-the-box support for Jenkins and Git. Additionally, it enables integration through open, interoperable extension points, which makes it easy to configure new life-cycle stages, workflows, and tools of a developer’s choice. This includes integration with:

  • Preferred integrated development environments (IDEs).
  • Popular software development lifecycle (SDLC) tools, such as Apache Subversion (SVN), Maven, Redmine, Clover, FindBugs and JUnit.
  • Any SDLC toolset that has the proper extensions.
  • Existing user repositories, including LDAP or Microsoft Active Directory.

New and Enhanced Features in WSO2 App Factory 2.0

Version 2.0 of WSO2 App Factory adds several new and enhanced capabilities to the open cloud-based DevOps platform.

Runs on WSO2 Private PaaS 4.0. WSO2 App Factory 2.0 runs on WSO2 Private PaaS 4.0, which also launches today. WSO2 Private PaaS 4.0 is the first platform as a service built on the Apache Stratos 4.0 PaaS framework. It adds a message bus as the core communication system to make the overall architecture more resilient and pluggable; integrates both real-time and rule-based decision-making; enhances capabilities for load balancing and elastic scaling, and adds smart policies and partitions to enable more controllability of the underlying infrastructure as a service (IaaS). For more information, see also the WSO2 Private PaaS press release dated June 16, 2014.

Expanded Tenant Capabilities. Version 2.0 of WSO2 App Factory now enables lazy loading of tenant artifacts, which delays their initialization until they are needed, improving performance. The newest release also has improved the Jenkins build server's scalability to support thousands of tenants at the same time, and it enhances capabilities for adding multiple tenants to a single WSO2 App Factory instance.

Per-Developer Repositories and Builds. WSO2 App Factory 2.0 adds the ability for developers to create their own repositories and builds by forking the main repository. As a result, developers can build and test features independently—without affecting others on the team—and then merge the code changes into the main repository when they are done.

Executive Dashboards. Integration of WSO2 App Factory 2.0 and WSO2 BAM enables IT professionals to create executive and CIO dashboards that provide a quick, global overview of what is happening with various projects across the company.

Other key new capabilities in WSO2 App Factory 2.0 include:

  • New custom URL mapping for applications, which enables production hosting of applications under custom URLs that companies can share with their consumers, rather than requiring a long internal URL for the application.
  • A new notification wall—similar to the right-hand pane in Facebook—that provides developers with continuous feeds on all the activities relevant to their applications.
  • Functionality for viewing runtime logs of applications or downloading archived runtime logs by specifying a date.
  • Ability to create applications by directly uploading a project's .war file (for Web apps, JAX-RS and JAX-WS apps) or .zip files (for apps built using the Jaggery server-side JavaScript scripting engine).
  • Lightweight multi-tenant issue tracking system to track bugs, features and improvements.
