WSO2 Simultaneously Launches Newest Releases of WSO2 Carbon Enterprise Middleware and WSO2 Stratos Cloud Middleware Platforms

Built on the Same Code Base, WSO2 Carbon and WSO2 Stratos Bring Enhanced Data Services and Deployment to Twelve Middleware Products and Their Cloud Counterparts Palo Alto, CA – November 14, 2011 – WSO2 today announced that for the first time, the company is simultaneously launching the newest releases of its two award-winning, 100% open source platforms: the WSO2 Carbon enterprise middleware platform and WSO2 Stratos cloud middleware platform. Built on the same modular, OSGi-compliant code base, WSO2 Carbon 3.2.2 and WSO2 Stratos 1.5.2 both add a new Ghost Deployer, new Column Store Service (CSS) based on Apache Cassandra, Apache Subversion (SVN) deployment option, and significantly enhanced load balancer. The new functionality is available to all twelve WSO2 Carbon middleware products and their corresponding WSO2 Stratos cloud-native middleware services. Additionally, all new features are immediately available on WSO2 StratosLive, the platform-as-a-service (PaaS) hosted by WSO2 and powered by the WSO2 Stratos software. As a result, enterprises have access to the latest WSO2 technology advances whether they are deployed on-premise, in a private cloud, on a public cloud, or hybrid cloud environment. WSO2 will demonstrate the latest versions of WSO2 Carbon, WSO2 Stratos, and WSO2 StratosLive at QCon San Francisco 2011. WSO2 is a sponsor of the developer conference, which is being held November 16–18, 2011 at the Westin San Francisco Market Street. “We realized early on that enterprises need to implement their applications and services flexibly and seamlessly, both on-premise and in the cloud, as their business and IT demands change,” said Samisa Abeysinghe, WSO2 vice president of engineering. “That is why we are committed to building our WSO2 Carbon and WSO2 Stratos platforms on a common set of modular code and ensuring that new features are available to all our customers. The simultaneous launch of WSO2 Carbon 3.2.2 and WSO2 Stratos 1.5.2 represents the maturity of our platforms and our ability to deliver on that commitment.” In addition to WSO2 Carbon 3.2.2, WSO2 Stratos 1.5.2 and WSO2 StratosLive, the WSO2 products and corresponding cloud services featuring the new functionality are:
  • WSO2 Application Server 4.1.2 / WSO2 Application Server as a Service

Features in WSO2 Carbon 3.2.2 and WSO2 Stratos 1.5.2 WSO2 Carbon is the industry’s first fully componentized middleware platform for creating, running and managing composite applications and Web services within an SOA. Built on the OSGi specification, WSO2 Carbon lets developers easily deploy and customize any of its WSO2 Carbon-based middleware products, and the 150-plus components on which they are comprised, providing greater flexibility and agility to meet changing enterprise demands.   WSO2 Stratos is the industry’s first complete cloud middleware platform for rapidly building and deploying applications and services with full multi-tenancy and the elasticity, reliability and scalability to support high-volume cloud environments. WSO2 Stratos is built on top of and extends WSO2 Carbon with cloud-native functionality, and it powers the WSO2 StratosLive public PaaS hosted by WSO2. Because WSO2 Carbon, WSO2 Stratos and WSO2 StratosLive share the same code, applications and services can be migrated smoothly and safely on premise, to a private cloud, to the public cloud, or to a hybrid environment. WSO2 Carbon 3.2.2, WSO2 Stratos 1.5.2 and the latest release of WSO2 StratosLive offer four significant enhancements to the platforms. New Ghost Deployer. This function is designed to maximize performance and optimize resource usage when large numbers of artifacts, or services, are deployed in the system. Instead of loading all artifacts deployed by a system or tenant, Ghost Deployers create ghost services that correspond to the real services. A real service that has not yet deployed is loaded only when it is invoked. This reduces memory consumption and improves the response times of the first requests sent by a system or tenant. New Column Store Service (CSS). Based on Apache Cassandra, CSS can be used as a data store to manage very high, Web-scale volumes of data. With it, users can manage (create, delete and modify) keyspaces, share keyspaces with other users, create indices, and monitor keyspaces. Additionally CSS can be used to manage external keyspaces and serve as a Cassandra management user interface. New Apache Subversion (SVN) Based Deployment. This deployment option enables SVN to manage the deployment artifacts for both products and services. It supports hot deployment and also enables scalability to support large numbers of artifacts. SVN deployment complements the registry-based deployment option already available with WSO2’s middleware and cloud platforms. Enhanced Load Balancer. Service-aware dynamic load balancing in the newest release means a single load balancer node can be set to balance the load across the instances of multiple service groups and route the requests among different service clusters. This results in the optimal utilization of resources. For example, no longer is it necessary to have five dedicated machines to run five load balancers for five services. The load balancer also features improved handling of fail-over scenarios. Availability and Support WSO2 Carbon 3.2.2, WSO2 Stratos 1.5.2 and WSO2 StratosLive are in production and available today. As fully open source middleware solutions released under the Apache License 2.0, they do not carry any licensing fees. Production support starts at $8,000 per server instance per year for WSO2 Carbon and $24,000 per year for each WSO2 Stratos installation. The WSO2 StratosLive middleware PaaS is backed by a standard service-level agreement and is available at three paid subscription levels: SMB, Professional and Enterprise, as well as a free Demo subscription.
