CHALLENGES
Jurong Port was ready to move ahead in becoming the ‘Next Generation Multipurpose Port’. However, in line with the company's digital transformation roadmap, it was evident that the existing technological infrastructure in place over the past two decades required a complete overhaul to fuel business agility and growth.
This involved careful consideration of an API-centric technology that enabled the use of an API gateway to breakdown the prior giant monolith application into microservices that guaranteed business scalability, easy deployment, and management, providing Jurong Port a total solution to monetize and capitalize on its digital assets.

About Jurong Port
- Headquartered in Singapore, Jurong Port is a leading global multipurpose port operator handling general, bulk, and containerized cargo. In 1965 Jurong Port commenced operations to serve the development needs of Singapore's Jurong industrial estate. Today, its main gateway terminal in Singapore handles over 15,000 vessels each year both regionally and internationally.
- Besides the main terminal, Jurong Port operates the Offshore Marine Centre, a multiuser waterfront facility providing port services to companies engaged in the fabrication of marine and offshore equipment. In addition, the company operates two separate lighter terminals for vessel crafts to deliver spares and provisions to ships calling at Singapore.
SOLUTION
WSO2 API Manager is one of the few products on offer that allows for integration between the API gateway on the OpenID Connect (OIDC) / OAuth2 authentication server. After careful consideration, WSO2 was selected as the API gateway of choice given its Java-based technology and excellent extensibility. Also, the open source business model enables product trials before subscription to support services.
During the staging phase of deployment, Jurong Port did a parallel run of their monolith application choosing to migrate key business functions into the new model consisting of an Angular-based front end and a SpringBoot based microservices backend with WSO2 API Manager as the gateway.
WSO2 Identity Server was then deployed as the key manager for authentication and authorization. The business made a conscious decision to deploy WSO2 Identity Server to meet the industry’s requirement for a safe, reliable, and secure identity access management system.
RESULTS
- One of the organizations pressing concerns was their ability to share information through an API with their business partners. The adoption of the WSO2 platform has resulted in the seamless and safe exchange of information. WSO2 Identity Server provided an authentication and authorization layer using industrial standard OAuth2 tokens, while rate limiting requirements were met by WSO2 API Manager.
- Jurong Port was able to roll out a fast and smooth microservices deployment, which coupled with their new DevOps practices noticeably improved efficiency. WSO2 Support has also been very helpful in rapidly resolving any issues during development, testing, and production.
