Epilepsy Center Improves Sharing of Patient Data Using 100% Open Source WSO2 Carbon Enterprise Middleware and SUSE Linux

Palo Alto, CA – January 27, 2014 – WSO2 today announced that The Epilepsy Institutes of the Netherlands Foundation (Stichting Epilepsie Instellingen Nederland, or SEIN), has implemented WSO2 Carbon enterprise middleware in combination with SUSE Linux to improve its information flow and integrate processes internally and externally with other organizations in the healthcare industry. The SEIN solution, which was implemented by WSO2 strategic partner Yenlo, includes WSO2 Enterprise Service Bus (WSO2 ESB), WSO2 API Manager (WSO2 API), and WSO2 Business Activity Monitor (WSO2 BAM).

The implementation was outlined in a new case study from WSO2, which can be downloaded at https://wso2.com/casestudies/epilepsy-center-improves-sharing-of-patient-data-with-wso2-carbon

Integrating Systems in the Highly Regulated Healthcare Industry

Based in Heemstede, the Netherlands, SEIN specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, support and research of epilepsy through its three clinical centers, 12 outpatient clinics, and other residential and special education facilities throughout the country. To perform the highly regulated exchange of information that allows SEIN to carry on its work—for example, sharing data with hospitals and insurance companies—SEIN asked Yenlo, WSO2’s world-wide implementation partner, to develop a solution for improving information flow and integrating processes.

The new case study from WSO2 examines the integration challenges facing SEIN, as well as the solution architecture Yenlo implemented for SEIN. Among the topics covered in the case study are:

  • The decision factors for deploying a 100% open source integration platform based on WSO2 ESB and SUSE Linux.
  • How the implementation enables SEIN to run critical business processes and manage patient information according to the requirements of the Health Level Seven (HL7) standard.
  • The role of WSO2 ESB in SEIN’s service-oriented architecture (SOA), serving as the central backbone for mediation and transformation.
  • The role of WSO2 API Manager in publishing APIs and managing developers’ access.
  • The use of WSO2 BAM to monitor the SEIN system’s performance metrics.

“The WSO2-SUSE combination implemented for us by Yenlo provides a centralized platform for exchanging data by integrating previously disparate information storage systems,” said Jean Willem Barzilay, chairman of the board of directors and responsible for all business units within SEIN. “Moreover, standardizing on open source software naturally entails cost reduction. From day one we have benefited from the user friendly solutions of WSO2 and SUSE.”

“We knew at the start that we wanted to build a solution for SEIN that could grow and adapt to its changing needs, while still adhering to strict requirements for the exchange of healthcare data,” said Ruben van der Zwan, CEO of Yenlo. “Using WSO2 Carbon enterprise middleware and SUSE Linux, we’ve met these goals, and today SEIN has a platform that offers the flexibility and ease of integration to address whatever the future may bring.”

“As one of the world’s leading institutes for the treatment and research of epilepsy, SEIN regularly coordinates processes with other healthcare organizations,” said Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarana, WSO2 founder and CEO. “We are thrilled by the success of Yenlo and SEIN in using our WSO2 Carbon enterprise middleware and SUSE Linux to securely integrate internal and third-party systems to facilitate SEIN’s online collaboration. It highlights the value of an open source, open standards approach to integrating the many systems that link processes across an enterprise’s ecosystem.”
