New standalone WSO2 Carbon core gives developers unprecedented flexibility to create custom SOA services

Industry’s Only Componentized SOA Platform Lets Developers Innovate New SOA Services Using 100-Plus WSO2 Carbon SOA Components

Mountain View, CA – July 8, 2009 – WSO2, the open source SOA company, today announced that a standalone version of the WSO2 Carbon Core is now available. The WSO2 Carbon Core is the heart of WSO2 Carbon, the industry’s only fully componentized service-oriented architecture (SOA) platform, which is built on the OSGi specification. Using the standalone WSO2 Carbon Core—and any combination of the 100-plus components that comprise the WSO2 Carbon SOA platform—developers have unprecedented flexibility to create exactly the composite services they want. Moreover, because the hot-pluggable WSO2 Carbon components all work together automatically, developers can innovate new SOA solutions that are reliable, sustainable, and easy to maintain or grow.

The WSO2 Carbon Core features the Carbon framework and user interface framework, which provide the core functionality required to run, view and manage all Carbon-based components. To obtain the WSO2 Carbon Core, developers previously needed to implement one of WSO2’s Carbon-based SOA products: the WSO2 Enterprise Service Bus (ESB), WSO2 Web Services Application Server (WSAS), WSO2 Registry, WSO2 Data Services, or WSO2 Business Process Server (BPS). With the standalone WSO2 Carbon Core, developers have the option to bypass the products and directly deploy only those WSO2 Carbon SOA components they want.

For example, IT professionals no longer need to implement the full WSO2 ESB and WSO2 BPS as separate products. Instead, developers who have downloaded the WSO2 Carbon Core can choose to implement only the relevant components for mediation and simple process management to create composite services.

“Developers should be able to focus on innovating SOA services that can serve their organizations in new, creative and profitable ways, not on integrating SOA vendors’ software,” said Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarana, founder and CEO of WSO2. “With our WSO2 Carbon Core, IT professionals can create highly customized and optimized SOA applications while ensuring enterprise-scale performance and reliability in a production environment.”

New WSO2 ESB and WSO2 WSAS Versions

In addition to launching the Carbon Core, WSO2 is releasing new versions of its WSO2 WSAS and WSO2 ESB. WSO2 WSAS 3.1 offers enhanced security and run-time performance. WSO2 ESB 2.1 offers complete REST support, along with enhancements to the sequence editor, service-level policy support, and eventing.

WSO2 Carbon Core Functionality

The WSO2 Carbon Core is a standalone packaging of the Carbon framework and user interface, which utilizes the Equinox p2 provisioning component to extend OSGi-based component integration. The Carbon framework delivers enterprise-class capabilities for management, security, clustering, logging, statistics, and tracing, as well as ease-of-use capabilities, such as the “Try-It” testing function. The user interface can be used to deploy, manage, and view services, processes, process instances, and statistics across any SOA components being implemented. The Carbon Core automatically recognizes any components that are added and allows them to utilize the Carbon framework and user interface.
