WSO2 to Present Technology Sessions on Web Services Security and Multi-Tenant Cloud Deployments at ApacheCon 2011

Sessions Will Provide IT Professionals with Best Practices for Implementing Web Services Security, Building an Application Server in the Cloud, and Enabling Axis2 Multi-Tenancy

Palo Alto, CA – October 31, 2011 – WSO2 today announced that ApacheCon 2011 will feature three presentations by WSO2 technical experts in service-oriented architecture (SOA), security, and cloud implementations. As a sponsor of the conference, WSO2 also will have a booth to demonstrate how its open source middleware enables enterprises to seamlessly deploy applications and Web services on-premise and in the cloud. ApacheCon 2011 is being held November 7-11, 2011 at the Westin Bayshore Vancouver in Vancouver.

Web Services Security - Patterns, Practices and Threats

Conventional Web service (WS) applications feature built-in security models and do not allow for much deployment flexibility, but there is a growing demand to develop applications that support heterogeneity within an SOA. As a result, the ability to connect heterogeneous applications without jeopardizing security is a top issue for many IT professionals. This half-day session will explore the “best-fit” security model for deployment in the cloud, including standards such as Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML), WS-Security, WS-Trust, WS-SecureConversation and WS-SecurityPolicy. This session also will examine patterns, best practices, and threats associated with SOA security models. Time: Monday, November 7, 2011, 2:30-5:30 p.m. Presenter: Prabath Siriwardena, WSO2 software architect and senior manager, plays a core role in developing the security functionality within WSO2’s platforms. Prabath also is an Apache Software Foundation (ASF) committer, serving as a Project Management Committee (PMC) member of Apache Axis2 and actively contributing to various open source projects.

Building a Scalable Multi-Tenanted Cloud-Native Application Server Using Tomcat, Axis2 and Synapse

Apache Tomcat, Axis2 and Synapse are the most popular and widely used servers in the IT industry. This session will explore how to combine these systems into a scalable, elastic, multi-tenant application server. This session also will examine how to seamlessly integrate with the authentication, authorization, and management infrastructure of the underlying platform-as-a-service (PaaS) and effectively deploy Web applications in the cloud. This session is part of the ApacheCon Tomcat Track. Time: Wednesday, November 9, 2011, 5:00-5:50 p.m. Presenters: Afkham Azeez, WSO2 director of architecture, is an ASF member, PMC member, and a committer and long-time contributor on a number of ASF projects. He is also the author of “Clustering implementation for Apache Axis2” and a co-author of the “Axis2 Web Services” book. Selvaratnam Uthaiyashankar, WSO2 senior software architect, currently works on Axis2/C, WSF projects and interoperability at WSO2. He specializes in distributed computing, natural language processing, and computer security.

A Multi-Tenant Architecture for Apache Axis2

Deploying Web service applications in the cloud allows enterprises to take full advantage of the benefits of cloud computing. However, such deployment imposes a security risk by requiring the sharing of resources and infrastructure. This session will teach SOA architects and developers how to securely deploy Web services within a single Axis2 cluster in a multi-tenant fashion. Additionally, this session will use WSO2 Stratos, an open source Java PaaS, as an example to examine installation, multi-tenancy, scaling, coding, and more. This session is part of the ApacheCon Enterprise Java Track. Time: Thursday, November 10, 2011, 11:30 a.m.–12:20 p.m. Senaka Fernando is a WSO2 associate technical lead and the product manager for the WSO2 Governance Registry. He is both an ASF and PMC member, as well as a committer on several ASF projects.

Demonstration: Build Seamlessly Integrated On-Premise and Cloud Applications

WSO2 will use its booth at ApacheCon 2011 to demonstrate how the 100% open source WSO2 Carbon, WSO2 Stratos and WSO2 StratosLive enable IT developers to build seamlessly integrated enterprise applications and services—whether they run on local servers, public clouds, private clouds, or hybrid cloud environments.

The award-winning WSO2 Carbon is the industry’s first fully componentized middleware platform for creating, running, and managing composite applications and Web services within an SOA. Built on the OSGi specification, WSO2 Carbon lets developers easily deploy and customize any of its WSO2 Carbon-based middleware products, and the 150-plus components on which they are comprised, providing greater flexibility and agility to meet changing enterprise demands.

The award-winning WSO2 Stratos is the industry’s first complete cloud middleware platform for rapidly building and deploying applications and services with full multi-tenancy and the elasticity, reliability and scalability to support high-volume cloud environments. It is built on top of and extends WSO2 Carbon. WSO2 StratosLive is the public PaaS hosted by WSO2 and powered by the WSO2 Stratos software. Because WSO2 Carbon, WSO2 Stratos and WSO2 StratosLive share the same code, applications and services can be migrated smoothly and safely on premise, to a private cloud, to the public cloud, or to a hybrid environment.
