Hardware devices that have various functional capabilities are nothing new. Internet of Things (IoT) is all about connecting these bits of hardware. Capabilities offered by hardware devices can be categorized into three main areas: device management, sensor data publishing, and controlling actuators.

The first step in getting a device connected is to recognize its existence. Device management would allow a device to be registered and grant it with authorization to expose it to the rest of the world. A successfully registered device can publish data it collects/generates to a data collection system and also expose its actuators to be controlled by authorized calls.

In this sense, providing an API to access and control a device seems to be the most natural thing to do. Building and exposing device APIs goes hand-in-hand with adhering to API management best practises. Therefore, IoT and API management is a match made in heaven.

In this webinar, Sumedha Rubasinghe, director - API architecture, will dive deep into API management in the IoT space covering the following areas:

  • Device registration
  • Exposing devices as APIs
  • Applying API management best practises to manage device APIs
  • Why OAuth2 is a natural fit for authorizing access to devices
Sumedha Rubasinghe Director - API Architecture, WSO2 Sumedha focuses on development of the WSO2 Carbon Core, WSO2 Data Services, WSO2 Governance Registry, WSO2 Business Activity Monitor, and WSO2 API Manager. He has contributed to the successful implementation of data, SAP and repository-based integration projects, as well many WSO2 QuickStart development consulting engagements. He is an active committer with the Apache Axis2 project.
