This talk is a sweeping overview of how the universe, the galaxy and the solar system have developed, as well as the critical role that dark matter—matter that doesn’t have any discernible interactions with light—has played. As we reflect on cultural, political and environmental changes to the planet today, it is useful to have in mind the billions of years of cosmological history that precede it. Professor Lisa Randall studies theoretical particle physics and cosmology at Harvard University where she is Frank B. Baird, Jr., Professor of Science. Her research connects theoretical insights addressing puzzles in our current understanding of the properties of matter, the universe, and space. Randall is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and is the recipient of many awards and honorary degrees. Professor Randall was included in Time Magazine's “100 Most Influential People” of 2007, was among Esquire Magazine's “75 Most Influential People of the 21st Century," and was one of 40 people featured in “The Rolling Stone 40th Anniversary issue" in 2008.
