GitOps, Gitless, Agentic: The Evolution of Platform Engineering

GitOps began in 2017 as a simple application delivery model built on four principles. Since then, it has become a core operating model for platform engineering, powering large cluster fleets, shared services, and Internal Developer Platforms. But as platforms evolve, GitOps is shifting from a delivery mechanism to a foundation for exposing state, automating operations, and providing reliable interfaces.
This talk traces the journey from GitOps-driven platform engineering to Internal Developer Platforms and the next step: Agentic Developer Platforms. Agents as first-class citizens need more than configuration in Git. They need clear platform state, policy-aware workflows, reliable APIs, and access to the final, real manifests.
