Preparing APIs for Agentic Consumption
AI agents are beginning to consume enterprise capabilities that were originally exposed as APIs for deterministic applications. However, making an API available to an agent does not automatically make it agent-ready. Agents need clear intent, useful context, well-defined workflows, predictable behavior, and runtime protections designed for autonomous consumption.
In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore how to prepare existing APIs for AI agents across three key areas: design, discovery, and runtime enforcement. We will examine how API contracts, descriptions, schemas, error responses, and workflow definitions influence an agent’s ability to select and use APIs correctly. We will also discuss how APIs and agent-oriented capabilities can be made discoverable through developer portals, catalogs, and MCP registries.
Participants will learn how MCP tools relate to API endpoints and why converting every endpoint directly into a tool often produces a fragmented and inefficient agent experience. Through practical examples, we will explore how to design task-oriented MCP tools, compose multiple API operations into meaningful workflows, manage context, and choose the right level of tool granularity.
Speakers
Nuwan has over 15 years of experience in the technology space, particularly in API management and integration. Since joining WSO2 in 2011 as a software engineer, he has been actively engaged in developing products as well as implementing solutions pertaining to integration and API management. In his current role, Nuwan is responsible for driving product innovation and management for WSO2's integration business unit. His areas of expertise include microservices, APIs, API management, enterprise integration, and enterprise application security. He has authored 'Microservices Security in Action' and has delivered talks at several global technology-related conferences on integration, APIs, and cloud-native technologies.
Pamod Sylvester is an Enterprise Architect at WSO2 and leads the Sales Engineering team for WSO2's Africa region. With more than 14 years of experience at WSO2, Pamod has worked closely with organizations across industries, helping them successfully design and implement API, integration, identity platforms and embrace AI capabilities.
