The Evolution of Platform Engineering: Building IDPs for Humans and AI Agents
Platform engineering emerged to shield developers from the complexity of cloud-native infrastructure, with Internal Developer Platforms (IDPs) providing self-service, golden paths, automation, and governance.
Now, AI agents are becoming active participants in the software lifecycle—building, deploying, troubleshooting, and operating software alongside humans. At the same time, agents themselves are becoming workloads that platforms need to manage, secure, observe, and govern.
This session explores how IDPs are evolving for this new reality: from platforms designed primarily for developers to AI-native platforms where humans and AI agents operate through the same abstractions, context, workflows, and guardrails. We’ll explore the key capabilities required for this evolution and use OpenChoreo as a practical example of what an IDP for humans and AI agents can look like.

Lakmal Warusawithana is VP and Distinguished Engineer at WSO2, specializing in cloud-native platforms, Kubernetes, and platform engineering. He is a maintainer of OpenChoreo, a CNCF Sandbox project, and has led the design of scalable developer platforms for enterprises. Previously, he was VP of the Apache Stratos PaaS project and co-founded thinkCube, building cloud platforms for telecom operators. Lakmal is a frequent speaker at industry conferences.
