WSO2 Technology Executives to Present Workshop and Sessions on Building and Analyzing APIs at API Strategy & Practice Conference 2014

APIStrat workshop will examine tactics for building successful APIs; sessions will cover how to scale API statistics and create APIs for legacy data sources

Mountain View, CA – September 16, 2014 – Managed APIs empower enterprises to produce new business opportunities and advance monetization and ecosystem development—effectively extending processes and services to customers, partners, and other groups within the organization. WSO2 Vice President of Platform Evangelism Chris Haddad and Director of API Architecture Sumedha Rubasinghe will present a workshop and two sessions on how to strengthen API management best practices at the API Strategy & Practice Conference (APIStrat) 2014. WSO2 is a Gold Sponsor of APIStrat, which will run September 24-26, 2014 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago in Chicago, IL.

Timed with APIStrat, WSO2 also will host a half-day technical workshop in Chicago: “API, Integration, and SOA Convergence.” The event will run 9:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. on Friday, September 26, 2014. Workshop – Building Successful APIs

Chris and Sumedha will jointly present the workshop "Six Tactics For Building Successful APIs,” which will be held 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 24, 2014. The interactive workshop will examine team best practices for building successful APIs that: gain widespread developer community adoption, increase operational resiliency, accelerate API delivery, and seamlessly evolve API design as business requirements change.

By building live APIs in the cloud, Chris and Sumedha will demonstrate design patterns, implementation decisions, and API environments (cloud and on-premises) that allow developers to tailor their APIs based on the target ecosystem and business model. Key topics they will cover include:

  • Orchestrating and aggregating back-end cloud services with an API façade layer
  • Synchronizing service-oriented architecture (SOA) service lifecycle governance and API lifecycle activities
  • Demonstrating API product success

Session – Turning Spreadsheets into APIs

Chris will lead the session, "Turning Spreadsheets into APIs," which will be held as part of the Data track on Thursday, September 25, 2014 from 2:05 – 3:20 p.m. In this session, he will outline the challenges of creating APIs for legacy data sources and aggregating open data. Additionally, Chris will describe how mainstream business users can tap into powerful open data models. Finally, Chris will put best-practice concepts into practice by demonstrating how to transform the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics flat files and spreadsheets into connected APIs that enable mainstream economic model collaboration.

Session – Dealing with API Statistics - The Scalable Way

Sumedha will present the session, "Dealing with API Statistics – The Scalable Way," which will run Thursday, September 25, 2014 from 2:05 – 3:20 p.m. as part of the Architecture track. The talk is designed to help organizations analyze who uses their APIs. Additionally Sumedha will examine how statistics help in capacity planning, deployment, maintenance of schedules, and trend analyses, as well as assist the decision-making process. He also will discuss scalable statistics collection for API ecosystems, key design considerations, real-time and offline analysis, and WSO2’s approach to addressing these challenges.

Demonstrating Open Source API Management and Internet of Things

As a Gold Sponsor, WSO2 will be demonstrating how Internet of Things (IoT) devices can be connected to the WSO2 platform, including WSO2 API Manager. Additionally, experts will be on hand to explain the capabilities of WSO2 API Manager, the first 100% open source API management product to combine easy, managed API access with full API governance and analysis.

As the first API management product to offer an API Store, it lets IT organizations set up their own Apple or Google Marketplace-like store where developers can easily subscribe to and consume APIs. Meanwhile it provides API publishers with complete API lifecycle governance—from creating to publishing, deprecating and retiring APIs—as well as analytics and metrics to support decision-making and enforce service-level agreement (SLA) policies.

WSO2 API Manager is built on the same WSO2 technology used by enterprises around the world, including a Global 1000 company that is handling more than 1 billion API calls per day. Providing full multi-tenancy, it runs directly on server hardware or in a virtualized environment, such as an Amazon or VMware cloud, bringing the efficiencies of multi-tenancy and self-service to on-premises deployments. Additionally, the cloud-ready WSO2 API Manager software can plug into the WSO2 platform as a service (PaaS) foundation to operate as part of a PaaS, adding cloud-native capabilities, such as elastic scaling, expanded self-service provisioning, metering, billing, and storage, among others.
