Legislation Leads the Way

Achieving interoperability is time consuming as the industry must undergo digitization.

In order to achieve digital transformation in healthcare as we have seen other industries reach like retail, taxi transportation and banking for example, we need more electronic or digital data sharing to occur. It is through data sharing with third party application developers and between data holders (i.e., payers and providers) that we will create and deliver digital experiences as well as enhance administrative and clinical workflows that will meet patient expectations and also lower healthcare costs.

In other words, we need to adopt an open data culture. This brings us to the 21st Century Cures Act legislation passed in 2016 that promotes open data with the implementation of standardized open APIs using FHIR®. The webinar also discusses the benefits of using APIs for data interoperability. We are transitioning from document-based exchanges to access-based exchanges with the implementation of open APIs that portals, mobile apps, and other systems use to talk to each other.

In the first of our three-part webinar series, WSO2 Open Healthcare Field CTO, Pablo Suarez, and CareJourney’s Co-founder and President, Aneesh Chopra, demystify the intricacies of the interoperability journey by sharing their insights on:

  • Key legislation for the road to digital transformation
  • Interoperability evolution
  • 1. Patient data access- the problem and the opportunity
  • 2. Data sharing between organizations and what's ahead
