Overview
Cooperazione Trentina, also known as Federazione Trentina della Cooperazione, is an umbrella organization representing over 400 cooperative enterprises in the Trentino region of Italy. It operates as a central coordinating body, providing strategic support, advocacy, and shared services to its member cooperatives across a wide range of economic and social sectors. Founded in 1895, it offers legal, financial, and training support across five key sectors: credit, agriculture, consumer goods, services, and social and housing.
In addition to reinforcing local economic development, Cooperazione Trentina fosters inter-cooperative collaboration, promotes sustainable and ethical business practices, and serves as a key liaison with public institutions at regional, national, and EU levels. Its mission is rooted in empowering communities, enhancing social cohesion, and driving innovation within the cooperative economy.

Challenge
Cooperazione Trentina identified a strategic need to drive digital transformation across its extensive cooperative network, ensuring that even the smallest cooperatives could modernize through sustainable and scalable investments. With approximately 280,000 citizens—nearly 50% of Trento’s population—connected to cooperatives, the organization saw an opportunity to enhance operational efficiency, improve service delivery, and strengthen territorial integration. To meet this need, it launched a project to evolve an existing consumer-focused loyalty card into a shared digital platform. This platform is designed to unify communication, enable shared ownership, and leverage common technological infrastructure to foster value creation and long-term competitiveness across the cooperative ecosystem.
Solution
To support its vision of a connected, digitally empowered cooperative community, Federazione Trentina della Cooperazione—through its digital initiative inCooperazione—set out to transform its legacy loyalty card system into a dynamic, value-driven territorial platform.
Partnering with Profesia, the Federation implemented WSO2 Identity Server as the backbone of its customer identity and access management (CIAM) strategy. This enabled a centralized yet flexible single sign-on (SSO) experience across various digital touchpoints, ranging from cooperative apps and member portals to in-store systems. WSO2 Identity Server also supports multiple authentication protocols and seamless integration with internal systems and third-party platforms, ensuring consistency and control across a federated IT environment.
Given the sensitive nature of cooperative member data such as personal profiles, contact history, and transactional information, the platform demanded advanced multi-tenant identity governance and data segregation. WSO2 Identity Server allows inCooperazione to navigate complex roles as both data controller and processor, depending on the cooperative context, such as when a user accesses services from a consumer cooperative, a credit union, or a social care provider–ensuring secure, compliant data handling across a diverse and decentralized ecosystem. WSO2 API Manager was implemented with Profesia’s deep expertise to manage services and API versions efficiently. Its lifecycle and versioning features enabled streamlined API management and flexible service orchestration.
This foundation was critical for enabling trusted digital interactions while preserving the values of transparency, autonomy, and shared ownership at the heart of the federation’s cooperative model.
