Challenge

As one of Ethiopia’s leading financial institutions, Hibret Bank faced emerging pressure to accelerate its digital transformation and introduce innovative, customer-focused services. However, its legacy point-to-point integration architecture was proving to be a significant roadblock in this endeavor. The system wrestled with complexities and high maintenance costs, which limited the bank’s ability to scale efficiently, enforce strong data governance practices, and rapidly respond to market demands.

With increasing customer expectations, evolving digital ecosystems, and the growing need to collaborate with fintechs and external partners, Hibret Bank recognized that its integration model needed a fundamental shift. The bank’s leadership set a strategic goal to modernize its enterprise architecture towards moving into a more agile, standardized, and future-ready foundation.

Objective

  • Modernize Enterprise Architecture: Simplify and standardize integration across systems through the adoption of a service-oriented architecture (SOA) and API-led connectivity approach.
  • Ensure Regulatory Compliance: Deploy on-premises to meet central bank data residency and security requirements.
  • Accelerate Time to Market: Replace complex point-to-point connections with a scalable, centralized integration layer.
  • Foster Ecosystem Collaboration: Enable secure, flexible integration with fintechs and external partners, supporting the bank’s goal of driving innovation and expanding service offerings.

Solution

To modernize its integration architecture and support its digital transformation goals, Hibret Bank implemented WSO2 integration and API management solutions. The bank deployed WSO2 Integrator's Micro Integrator (MI) as the integration layer and WSO2 API Manager to manage and expose APIs securely and efficiently across the organization.

Given strict regulatory requirements from the Central Bank of Ethiopia, the entirety of the solution was deployed on-premises, ensuring compliance with data residency and security mandates while giving the bank full control over its infrastructure. The implementation strategy followed a phased approach, gradually migrating legacy point-to-point integrations to the new WSO2 platform. At the same time, all new integrations were developed using WSO2 products, enabling the bank to shift towards a modular, service-oriented architecture complemented with an API-led connectivity model.

Results

  • Modernized Integration Architecture: Replaced legacy point-to-point connections streamlining internal system connectivity and reducing duplication efforts.
  • Successful Rollout of Mission-Critical Integrations: Enabled critical services such as Telebirr mobile banking, MPesa payment notifications, microfinance institution connections (e.g., Awach), and Flygate airline payment/refund processing–improving service reach and responsiveness.
  • Rapid Speed to Market: Dramatically reduced time to launch new services and onboarding partners, positioning the bank with enhanced business agility in the evolving banking and finance sphere. 
  • Improved Compliance and Data Control: The on-premises deployment ensured adherence to strict data residency and security requirements mandated by the Central Bank of Ethiopia, while maintaining full operational control.
  • Empowered In-House Development: Bolstered internal development teams to lead development through WSO2 training and ongoing technical support. 
  • Established a Dedicated Integration Unit: Formed a specialized team to manage and scale the growing integration ecosystem across the organization.
  • Enhanced Real-Time Data Sharing: Enabled secure, efficient data exchange across internal systems and departments improving operational efficiency and decision-making.
  • Strengthened Ecosystem Collaboration: Built a flexible platform equipping Hibret Bank to engage effectively with fintechs and external partners, positioning the bank for long-term growth in an increasingly digital financial landscape.
