From Niche to Norm: Platforms, Open Source, and What's This Got to Do with Modernization?

Over the last decades, two major developments have shaped the world of software: the rise of platforms and the rise of open source.

Platforms have evolved from the thinnest of layers to virtualization, containers, and cloud native computing — all while expanding beyond just infrastructure. At the same time, open source has progressed from a low-cost alternative to a fierce competitor and now an innovation driver. Neither of these trends is accidental. Ultimately, what matters is the ability to develop and securely run applications, create and maintain differentiation, and continuously modernize. That requires reliable infrastructure and rich and robust platforms, built with openness and collaboration.

Prominent examples include Linux, OpenStack, and Kubernetes, and the journey continues up the stack — to internal developer platforms and beyond.
