Engineering the Backbone: How We Built Our Internal Developer Platform

In today’s rapidly evolving technology landscape, building and maintaining a robust internal developer platform (IDP) presents significant challenges. In this talk, Lakmal will share:

  • WSO2’s journey in building an IDP, highlighting the technical and organizational hurdles of scalability, security, and integration, and how we addressed them.
  • How we implemented a cell-based architecture and integrated tools like Kubernetes, Envoy, Argo Workflows, Prometheus, Fluent Bit, OpenSearch, KEDA, eBPF, and Cilium to deliver a scalable, secure, and observable platform.
  • The importance of a unified console to manage the functionality of these diverse tools and how we made that a reality.
  • The expertise and resource investment required to successfully build and operate a platform.

What we got wrong, the lessons we learned, and how we adapted to overcome those challenges.
