During Telstra's digital transformation initiatives, the company discovered that multiple business divisions employed ad hoc solutions for protocol and payload translations; the company did not have a single shared technology platform that the entire organization could use. This requirement for a single solution to handle business challenges was underlined as a key component of the organization's orchestration strategy.
While the existing API stack was running on a legacy system, Telstra needed an integration platform to effectively manage and monitor its existing APIs. The company adopted an API-first strategy by transferring the organization's specifications to microservices, with over 1,000 APIs and over 30 billion transactions on average each month. Telstra required a solution that would speed project delivery times and be simple enough to use across the company's many third-party integrations and protocol translation requirements. The main areas of concern were related to protocol translation, payload translation, payload aggregation, and traffic segregation.
The new solution had to be customer-friendly and provide a great experience for Telstra tenants, conform to stringent security standards (e.g., when onboarding vendors and their solutions), and allow the control and data planes to be hosted on-premises. Since each team's integration requirements were different, the solution had to allow them to adopt the technologies that appeared to be the best fit for the job. It was critical to be able to unify all of the different integration requirements into a single product platform.
Industry: Telecommunications
Country: Australia
Telstra is Australia's largest telecommunications and technology company, with a comprehensive variety of communications services and a presence in all telecommunications markets. In Australia, the company provides 18.8 million retail mobile services, 3.8 million retail fixed bundles and standalone data services, and 960,000 retail fixed standalone voice services. It operates the country’s largest and fastest mobile network. Telstra also provides Cloud, Unified Communications, Mobility, Network, Security, and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions to a vast number of businesses and enterprises across Australia and the rest of the world.
Following an RFP process, Telstra carefully evaluated a number of leading vendor offerings on how they aligned with the company’s key requirements—including strong DevOps capabilities, multi-tenancy, and three different forms of deployment flexibility. The chosen solution also had to be lightweight, with the ability to scale and accommodate future business expansions.
WSO2 Micro Integrator met all of the criteria and was selected as the implementation technology. Key differentiating factors included its flexibility, ease of use and deployment, and open source approach to comprehensive API lifecycle management. The solution also did not require any bolted-on API technology.
Telstra Mashup API as a Service (MaaS) is a platform offering from the Composite API Orchestration Services (CAOS) mission under OE&ST. The platform provides the following benefits.
In addition, the platform also provides the following services.
WSO2 Micro Integrator serves as a multi-tenancy solution within the Telstra platform and provides the ability for multiple users to enter and have their services hosted using WSO2. The solution runs in a Kubernetes cluster within an AWS environment with connectivity provided to all internal applications. This enables the domain core services to build orchestration APIs.
In terms of software, we are extremely pleased with how quickly product updates are made and deployed for use. This has resulted in a seamless experience for both the company and our tenants."
